Cracking The Code:

How 21st Century Building Codes Will Make Or Break Our Communities

6:00 - 6:30; Reception

6:30 - 8:30; Program

What if every new building in Philadelphia were a green building?  What if everyone had access to the waterfronts, could enjoy safe bike lanes, and could conveniently utilize public transportation?

Zoning codes play a major role in almost every current effort to make Philadelphia a more sustainable city. How zoning codes are created and designated has major implications for the future of our city. Advocates for sustainability, design professionals, and interested citizens are welcomed to come learn more about ongoing efforts and upcoming zoning and building code reforms from city and state officials, national experts, and local practitioners.

Speakers:

  • Fran Burns: Commissioner,  Deptartment of Licenses and Inspections, City of Philadelphia
  • Maureen Gutman: Executive Director, the Governors Green Government Council, State of Pennsylvania; Committee Member, International Green Codes Council
  • Patrick McDonald: Owner and Co-Founder, Onion Flats
  • Don Elliot: Senior Consultant, Clarion Associates

Center for Environmental Policy

The goals of the Center for Environmental Policy (CEP) at The Academy of Natural Sciences are to evaluate key issues of environmental policy, facilitate dialogues and decision-making on environmental topics, and inform the public from both an academic as well as practical perspective.  The CEP will answer the need for a non-partisan, science-based organization that is capable of accessing and guiding a myriad of public and private stakeholders.

For more information on current CEP projects and initiatives, please see www.ansp.org/environmental/index.php
